MANILA, Philippines — A minor phreatic explosion was recorded in Taal on Tuesday morning following a series of volcanic tremors overnight, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

The Office of Civil Defense — CALABARZON earlier reported the eruption, while in its 8 AM report, PHIVOLCS confirmed the explosion, to which it was labeled as “minor phreatomagmatic eruption.”

The minor phreatomagmatic eruption from Taal Volcano’s main crater was recorded at 5:58 AM today and generated a 2800-meter grayish plume before drifting west-southwest.

Despite this explosion, Taal Volcano remains at Alert Level 1, which means the volcano shows slightly more earthquakes and steam or gas activity, occasional explosions from vents, hotter springs, and minor swelling of its structure.

The bureau said that the activity is caused by hydrothermal, magmatic, or tectonic disturbances near the crater or Irosin Caldera, this means that  entry into the permanent danger zone is strictly prohibited.

The report likewise said that the volcano continues to emit steam plumes, reaching up to 600 meters high, with moderate intensity. These plumes were observed drifting southwest, consistent with prevailing wind patterns.

During the 24-hour observation period, the agency said that two volcanic tremors were recorded, each lasting four minutes. These tremors are indicative of ongoing hydrothermal or magmatic activity beneath the surface.
