MANILA, Philippines — Commuters using the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) systems will enjoy free rides on Friday, December 20, 2024, as part of a holiday initiative announced by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

In a statement shared on his official social media pages on Thursday, Marcos said the free rides will cover the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 from the start of operations until the close of revenue lines.

“This initiative is a simple way to reduce commuting expenses for Filipinos busy with Christmas preparations. We hope it provides some relief and fosters a sense of care from the government during the holiday season,” the President said in Filipino.

According to the President, approximately 1.1 million passengers used the train systems this year, highlighting their role in daily transportation.

Commuters are advised to plan their trips accordingly to take advantage of the free rides. The program aims to support public transport users during the busy holiday season.

Over 7 million Filipino commuters are expected to flock to several transportation terminals and seaports during this holiday season according to the Department of Transportation.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) have implemented measures to address the anticipated increase in passengers during the holiday season.

The LTFRB has extended the validity of special permits for public utility vehicles (PUVs) until January 10, 2025, to help meet transportation demand.

Railway systems have also adjusted their operating hours to accommodate the expected rise in passenger volume.
