MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported on Thursday a sharp increase in sulfur dioxide emissions from Kanlaon Volcano, signaling intensified volcanic activity as Alert Level 3 remains in effect.

In its latest bulletin, PHIVOLCS recorded 6,014 tons  of sulfur dioxide emissions per day on December 25, 2024.

This figure is notably high and signals persistent volcanic activity, prompting authorities to maintain Alert Level 3 over the volcano.

Kanlaon, located on Negros Island, has shown heightened activity in the past 24 hours, with two ash emissions lasting from 59 to 65 minutes and 20 volcanic earthquakes, including seven volcanic tremors ranging between 29 and 92 minutes.

The ash plumes reached up to 400 meters and drifted westward, impacting areas to the south and southwest of the volcano.

Ground deformation measurements also indicate swelling of the volcano, suggesting ongoing magmatic intrusion.

These developments show potential hazardous eruptions, including lava flows, pyroclastic density currents, and ashfall.

PHIVOLCS has warned residents and local governments of the dangers posed by the increased sulfur dioxide flux.

Exposure to high levels of this gas can lead to respiratory issues and environmental damage, it said.

The agency has renewed calls for the evacuation of individuals within a six-kilometer radius of the crater and prohibited any aircraft from flying near the summit.

The public is likewise urged to remain vigilant and monitor official updates as the situation evolves. Local governments in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental are advised to prepare for possible escalation in volcanic activity, especially during heavy rains that could trigger lahar flows.
