MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) reported Friday a total of 284 road traffic incidents within 5 days of the holiday peak.
This figure reflects a 9 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023, according to the DOH data of eight pilot monitoring sites from December 22 to December 27, 2024.
“Karamihan sa mga sangkot sa road traffic injuries ngayong holiday season ay walang suot na safety accessories gaya ng helmet at seatbelt,” DOH said in a report.
Of the recorded incidents, 53 involved drivers who were under the influence of alcohol, highlighting the persistent issue of impaired driving.
The health department also said that 249 of the cases failed to use proper safety gear, such as helmets for motorcycle riders or seatbelts for vehicle passengers.
A total of 196 of the total cases were motorcycle-related accidents, underscoring the heightened vulnerability of riders on the road, it said.
To reduce road incidents, the DOH likewise said motorists should abide by the following safety reminders:
- Avoid driving when fatigued or under the influence of alcohol, as this impairs coordination and reaction time.
- Wear helmets and seatbelts at all times while on the road.
- Follow speed limits and traffic signs to ensure safe travel.
- Get sufficient rest (7–8 hours of sleep) before long trips and avoid distractions, including mobile phone use, while driving.
