MANILA, Philippines — Two people died while six others were rescued after a motorbanca capsized in the waters off Barangay Rawis, Laoang, Northern Samar, amid rough sea conditions, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported Thursday.

The motorbanca, carrying six passengers and two crew members, was en route from Barangay Rawis to Batag Island when it was struck by large waves, causing it to overturn.

The incident transpired on December 30, 2024 but was only reported Thursday.

In a joint search and rescue operation, PCG said two bodies were recovered along the shoreline of Barangay Rawis, while the remaining four passengers and two crew members were found safe.

The recovered bodies were transported to the Laoang Rural Health Unit for post-mortem examination, while the survivors received medical assistance at a nearby hospital.

Authorities reminded the public to exercise caution and monitor weather advisories before embarking on sea travel, especially during adverse weather conditions.
