MANILA, Philippines — Authorities from the Quiapo Church have released its guidelines for the upcoming feast of the Black Nazarene this year, marking the second year the image will be doing the tradition after its temporary suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2024, over 6.5 million devotees joined the procession after a three-year pause due to the pandemic.

Officials have yet to release crowd estimates for this year but the figures could be higher due to the comeback of traditional activities set for the feast including the “Pahalik” or the kissing or wiping of the image of the Black Nazarene.

Ahead of the celebration, Quiapo Church officials said that devotees should abide by the following reminders to ensure safe celebration of the feast:

Dos:

  • Eat before the Traslación to have enough energy throughout the procession.
  • Devotees are allowed to throw their handkerchiefs to be wiped on the image of the Black Nazarene.
  • Pull the rope attached to the carriage carefully and orderly.
  • Maintain solemnity during the Holy Mass and avoid causing distractions.
  • Keep Quiapo Church and Quirino Grandstand clean. Dispose of trash in designated bins.
  • If feeling unwell, stay on the side of the road.

Don’ts:

  • Do not climb onto the carriage or platform carrying the image of the Black Nazarene.
  • Do not push other devotees.
  • Do not bring too many belongings. If carrying a bag, choose a transparent one for easier inspection.
  • Do not use umbrellas, caps, or hoodies.
  • Do not set up camping tents, tables, or other picnic items, especially for overnight stays.
  • Do not bring tumblers. If bringing water, use a transparent container.
  • Do not bring drone cameras, professional cameras, or selfie sticks.
  • Do not bring portable appliances like stoves or cooking equipment.
  • Do not bring large bags.
  • Do not bring alcoholic or intoxicating beverages.
  • Do not bring food sticks.
  • Do not bring pets.

The National Capital Region Police Office announced last week that over 14,000 police officers will be deployed to ensure the safety and security of the Feast of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila, on January 9.

The Philippine Red Cross will likewise station 500 volunteers and staff during the grand procession.
