MANILA, Philippines — Malacanang Palace has suspended government work and classes at all levels in the cities of Manila and Pasay in light of Iglesia Ni Cristo’s rally.

The Office of the President announced in Memorandum Circular No. 76, released on Friday and signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, that the declaration was made in anticipation of the large number of participants expected to attend the National Rally for Peace.

“In view of the numerous participants expected to travel to and within the cities of Manila and Pasay on January 13, 2025 for the ‘National Rally for Peace’ of the Iglesia Ni Cristo, and to allow for the organized conduct of the event, the work in government offices and classes at all levels in the cities of Manila and Pasay shall be suspended on January 13, 2025,” the memorandum read.

The memorandum also stated that agencies responsible for providing basic and health services, disaster preparedness and response, as well as other essential services, “shall continue their operations.”

It further indicated that the suspension of operations for private companies and offices would be at the discretion of their respective heads.

The National Rally for Peace is a gathering organized by the INC in support of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s position to stop moves to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte, his former running mate during the 2022 elections, though they severed ties less than halfway through their terms.

Duterte is facing three separate impeachment complaints stemming from issues related to betrayal of public trust, graft, and corruption, among others.

She recently threatened to assassinate Marcos, the First Lady, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

A fourth impeachment complaint is currently in the pipeline against the embattled Duterte.
