MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has shown support for the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority’s (MMDA) proposal to implement an earlier work schedule for government offices to help alleviate traffic congestion, in light of the planned EDSA rehabilitation later this year.
“We’re studying it. If it works, we’ll do it,” President Marcos said when asked about the MMDA’s recommendation.
The MMDA has proposed a new government office work schedule from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM as part of efforts to ease traffic in the metro.
Marcos noted that there has to be consultations with traffic managers and the commuting public, who would be most affected by the proposed change.
“So, if it turns out that everyone agrees to it, then I cannot see why it will be a problem,” he said.
The MMDA, together with Metro Manila Council and MMDA Chairman Romando Artes, presented findings from a recent study showing that modified work schedules have helped ease traffic congestion in Metro Manila.
The revised work schedule policy, once approved by all 17 NCR mayors, will be submitted to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for consideration.
A survey conducted among LGUs where the policy was tested indicated positive results, showing improved traffic flow and shorter travel times during peak hours.
The MMDA’s report also noted a significant reduction in traffic delays along Metro Manila’s major roads.
The agency estimates that the proposed work hours will affect approximately 175,918 government workers in the region who use private vehicles, accounting for 37.15 percent of the NCR’s government workforce.
Meanwhile, around 223,508 public transportation commuters, or 47.20 percent of government employees, are expected to benefit by avoiding the usual rush hour.
