MANILA, Philippines — A Japanese national linked to the notorious ‘Luffy’ gang has been arrested in the Philippines, authorities confirmed.
The Bureau of Immigration (BI) said in a report that it arrested Sasaki Takashi, 43, at a residence in Savana Village, San Pablo City, Laguna.
BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado described Takashi as an undesirable alien wanted for multiple crimes in Japan.
“Takashi is a fugitive from justice wanted by the Japanese government for theft and fraud, targeting vulnerable individuals,” Viado said.
“His presence in the Philippines endangers our communities and undermines our commitment to maintaining security and order,” he said.
A Warrant of Arrest was issued against Takashi by the Tokyo Summary Court in January 2023 for violations of Japan’s Penal Code.
Japanese authorities allege that Takashi and his accomplices stole ATM cards and bank information from elderly victims by posing as law enforcement or finance officials conducting fake investigations.
Further investigation revealed that Takashi is allegedly part of the ‘Luffy’ group, a Japanese criminal syndicate accused of running telecom fraud and extortion operations in the Philippines.
“This arrest underscores the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in protecting the public from transnational crimes,” Viado said.
“We will continue to strengthen our partnerships with both local and international agencies to ensure that the Philippines does not become a haven for fugitives,” he said.
Authorities said Takashi will be held at the Bureau of Immigration Warden Facility (BIWF) while awaiting deportation.
