MANILA, Philippines—A Chinese national wanted for drug-related charges was arrested while attempting to extend his tourist visa in the country, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said.

The BI identified the individual as 44-year-old Lin Guangxiu, who was arrested on February 11 at the agency’s head office in Intramuros. Authorities confirmed that Lin was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice for alleged drug-related offenses.

Lin is reportedly facing prosecution for violating Section 11, Article II of Republic Act No. 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

“This arrest demonstrates our unwavering commitment to keeping the country safe from foreign fugitives,” said BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado in a statement issued Wednesday.

“The Philippines will not be a refuge for criminals. We will continue to ensure that our borders remain secure and that those attempting to evade justice are apprehended,” he said.

During the visa extension process, BI personnel detected inconsistencies in Lin’s records and reported the matter to Tourist Visa Section (TVS) Chief Raymond Remigio.

The case was then referred to the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit (FSU), leading to Lin’s arrest.

“This case proves the effectiveness of our screening procedures,” said Remigio.

“We remain vigilant in preventing foreign fugitives from exploiting our immigration system,” he said.

Authorities reported that in 2019, Lin and an accomplice were allegedly found in possession of over 138 tape-sealed transparent packs containing approximately 270,000 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride or “shabu.”

Lin is currently being held at the BI facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Bicutan, while awaiting deportation proceedings.

Officials stated that the arrest aligns with the government’s efforts to enhance border security and enforce immigration laws.

“We will continue working with international law enforcement agencies to track down fugitives and deport them without delay,” Viado added.

Viado also reiterated that foreign nationals attempting to evade justice will face legal action.
