MANILA, Philippines — Amid ongoing budget cuts, the Department of Education (DepEd) Central Office has launched an investigation into claims of ghost students within the Senior High School (SHS) Voucher Program targeting 12 private schools across 9 divisions, allegedly exploiting the program for financial gain.
The probe is aimed at uncovering potential involvement by school personnel and officials in this fraudulent activity, which could result in the termination of the implicated schools’ participation in the SHS Voucher Program.
DepEd said it is acting quickly to preserve the integrity of its funds and the program’s implementation.
“We take these allegations seriously. Any form of misuse of public funds intended for critical education programs will not be tolerated. This investigation is a necessary step as we pursue the truth and hold accountable those responsible,” said Secretary Sonny Angara in a statement Monday.
In response to these findings, DepEd has started preparing to revoke the accreditation of the implicated schools, while also collecting evidence against those responsible.
The Department is considering legal measures, including administrative and criminal sanctions, in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.
Meanwhile, DepEd assures the public that it will provide necessary support to affected, legitimate students, ensuring their continued education without disruption.
The Department also reaffirms its commitment to strengthening monitoring mechanisms to prevent similar incidents in the future.
