Vice President Sara Duterte and Bayan Muna
MANILA, Philippines – The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte can be over “within a month” according to Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares.
Contrary to claims that trial cannot commence while on Congress break, Colmenares, who served as a public prosecutor in previous impeachment cases said the Senate should convene itself impeachment court “as soon as possible.”
“Kaya ba nilang matapos ang impeachment trial before June 30? Yes, kayang-kaya,” Colmenares said in a forum.
Colmenares said key issues against the Vice President such as the controversial disbursement of confidential funds and her public meltdowns are enough to get the ball rolling.
“Focus on one ground, betrayal of public trust. Focus on one to two [articles of impeachment], kaya nila tapusin yan, lalo na ang ebidensya na P125 million. Napakalakas. Wala na masyadong dagdag na oras diyan,” he said.
“Unahin niyo siguro yung P125 million. Betrayal of public trust. Pangalawa, ‘ung meltdown niya sa ano, ‘yung tine-threaten niyang magpatay. Those are very clear evidence. Wala na masyadong magtumpik-tumpik pa,” he said.
“Wala pa nga sigurong ‘sang buwan tapos na yan eh, so hindi totoo na hindi kaya tapusin ngayon. At mata-traverse pa sa next Congress,” he said.
Colmenares recently wrote to Senate President Chiz Escudero urging him to convene the Senate as an impeachment court.
Escudero meanwhile has always maintained his position that no trial shall commence while the Senate is in recess and will only start after the 20th Congress enters into function on June 2.
The Senate chief also shot back at critics accusing the Senate of delaying the process when the House sat on the complaint for over two months.
