MANILA, Philippines—Authorities have re-arrested South Korean fugitive Na Ikhyeon just five days after he escaped from custody, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) announced.
Na was recaptured in Barangay Pampang, Angeles City, Pampanga, through a joint operation involving the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit and Intelligence Division, alongside various law enforcement agencies, including the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Naval Intelligence and Security Group Northern Luzon.
Also arrested was Kang Changbeom, who authorities identified as Na’s accomplice. CCTV footage and intelligence reports confirmed that Kang aided Na’s escape.
Further verification with the Korean National Police Agency revealed that Kang is also a wanted fugitive in South Korea for fraud.
Both fugitives will be transferred to the BI detention facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City, under heightened security measures, as they have been classified as high-risk detainees.
Meanwhile, three BI employees linked to Na’s escape were sanctioned. Two contractual employees were immediately dismissed, while a permanent employee’s case was referred to the Department of Justice (DOJ). DOJ Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla confirmed the termination of the third employee on Friday.
