MANILA, Philippines – Veronica “Kitty” Duterte, the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte who was with him the entire time of his arrest and detention, has sought Supreme Court intervention to compel the Philippine government to bring her father back to the country after being arrested by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Tuesday, (March 11).

On Wednesday, her lawyer and former chief presidential legal counsel Salvador Panelo, along with his son, Atty. Salvador Paolo Jr.  filed a writ of habeas corpus before the Supreme Court with Kitty as the petitioner.

“The petition will ask the Supreme Court to compel the government to bring him back and for it to account for its constitutional transgressions on the rights of PRRD [President Rodrigo Roa Duterte] and its unpatriotic and abject surrender of the country’s sovereignty to [the] ICC, that has no jurisdiction over the former,” the older Panelo said.

The writ of habeas corpus is a court order commanding a person detaining another individual to produce the detainee’s physical body at a designated time and place and explain the reason for the detention.

The former president was served warrant upon his arrival from Hong Kong. He was detained at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City and flown to The Hague, Netherlands on Tuesday night to face trial before the ICC over supposed crimes against humanity during his administration.
