MANILA, Philippines — Senator Jinggoy Estrada urged Filipinos to remain calm and respect due process amid the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) ongoing investigation into former President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs.
“In this time of heightened emotions and division, I call on the Filipino people to remain calm and exercise sobriety as the legal proceedings unfold. We must refrain from engaging in any form of violence, spreading misinformation, or taking actions that may only further polarize our country,” Estrada said in a statement.
Duterte was arrested on the basis of an ICC-issued warrant in connection to his war on drugs campaign.
He was arrested by the Philippine law enforcement officials shortly after he landed from a sortie in Hong Kong.
The senator emphasized that Duterte, like any Filipino citizen, has the right to legal recourse and is well aware of the proper steps to take.
“Like any Filipino citizen, former Pres. Duterte is entitled to legal recourse, and as a lawyer, he knows the proper steps to take. I trust that his rights will be respected and protected,” he added.
Estrada also expressed confidence in the Philippine justice system, asserting that it remains functional and capable of ensuring a fair process for all individuals involved.
“Matibay at gumagana ang ating justice system kaya’t naniniwala ako na matitiyak na dadaan sa tamang proseso ang lahat at alinsunod ito sa mga umiiral na batas,” he said.
The senator also noted the importance of national “unity,” warning against actions that could further divide the country as the ICC proceedings continue.
“Maintaining our nation’s unity and stability is crucial as we navigate this challenging chapter in history,” Estrada concluded.
Duterte faces an ICC probe over alleged human rights violations linked to his anti-drug campaign, which reportedly led to thousands of deaths.
The government tally showed that over 7,000 people were killed during Oplan Tokhang, but several human rights watchdogs believe the death toll could be as high as 30,000.
His administration has repeatedly dismissed the investigation, insisting that the Philippines has a functioning legal system capable of handling such matters.
