MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Embassy in The Hague has extended consular assistance to former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte following his arrival at Rotterdam Airport, where he was turned over to officials of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

According to a statement from the embassy early Thursday morning, Duterte landed at the airport at 4:56 p.m. CET (11:56 p.m. PH time) on board a chartered flight, RP-C5219.

His custody was officially transferred by Philippine law enforcement authorities to the Judicial Cooperation Unit of the ICC Office of Registry.

“In view of the winter season in Europe, the Embassy prepared, procured, and delivered winter clothing, a change of clothes, and care packages for the former President,” the embassy said.

The same assistance was extended to Duterte’s accompanying delegation and the flight crew.

Additionally, the Netherlands’ Immigration Authorities granted two-day visas to those who escorted the former President, including his nurse and aide, allowing them time to rest before their return trip.

“Former Executive Secretary Medialdea was issued a 15-day visa as counsel of the former President and has been granted permission to visit the former President tomorrow, Thursday, at the ICC Detention Center in Scheveningen, The Hague,” the statement said.

Concerned about Duterte’s health, embassy officials also raised the need for close medical monitoring with the ICC and the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Upon arrival, an ICC nurse coordinated with Duterte’s personal nurse to assess his medical condition, relaying details to the ICC Medical Doctor for a check-up at the detention center.

“Upon arrangement by the Embassy, the ICC officials handed over to the former President the names and contact numbers of Embassy officials who can be reached by mobile phone for any consular assistance that he may need,” the embassy said.
