MANILA, Philippines—Bureau of Immigration (BI) officers have arrested a Chinese man who previously sparked outrage for allegedly kicking a cat to death at Ayala Triangle Gardens in Makati.
Authorities identified the suspect as Jiang Shan, 32, who was taken into custody outside his residence in Brgy. Palanan after being found to have overstayed in the country.
BI records indicate that Jiang entered the Philippines as a tourist in May 2023 but failed to renew his visa after September 2023.
When confronted by immigration officers, Jiang was unable to present any valid documents. He was immediately detained, processed, and transferred to the BI’s Bicutan facility in Taguig, where he is now awaiting deportation proceedings.
BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado urged foreign nationals to respect Philippine laws. “Filipinos are known to be very hospitable to our guests,” Viado said. “But guests should not come to our houses kicking our pets. His cruel action led to the BI conducting checks on his records, and now he’s detained to be deported.”
Jiang gained notoriety online after he was caught on video kicking a community cat named “Ken” while it was resting on a walkway. The cat later died from its injuries.
Witnesses claimed Jiang was dismissive and refused to provide his details when confronted by concerned citizens following the incident.
