Atty. Harry Roque
MANILA, Philippines – Atty. Harry Roque slammed the International Criminal Court (ICC) for “not allowing” accused former President Rodrigo Duterte access to his family.
“I’m a bit disappointed at the practices of the ICC that has delayed the visit of a family member to an accused,” Roque said in an interview after the Pre-trial Chamber appearance of the former president on Friday (March 14).
“We look up to the ICC as a model for international justice and the fact that it has taken two days for a family member to see the accused I think does not speak well of the practices of the court.,” he said.
“We condemn it. Why does it take two days for a family member to visit an accused. That’s unacceptable,” he said.
Roque, an international law expert and one of the only five ICC-accredited lawyers in the Philippines, stands as among the members of the former president’s legal team. The tough-talking lawyer has been in hiding for months following an arrest order from the House of Representatives for contempt showed up and flew to The Hague, Netherlands along with Vice President Sara Duterte and Sen. Robin Padilla to form the defense team of the former leader.
“This is unheard of even in a country like the Philippines, a family member, a daughter no less, was not allowed access to her father, this is a very sad day for international justice,” he said.
