MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded 426 deaths due to rabies from January to March 2024, nearly doubling the 235 cases reported in 2020.

in a report, the agency confirmed that all recorded rabies cases this year were fatal, raising alarms over the disease’s continued spread.

The DOH data shows that 45 percent of infections were transmitted by household pets, primarily dogs.

Rabies is typically spread through bites, scratches, or saliva exposure from infected animals, with symptoms including fever, headaches, numbness, and swelling at the wound site.

Without immediate medical intervention, the disease is almost always fatal, it said.

Health officials have urged the public to take preventive measures, including vaccination for pets and immediate medical attention for animal bites.

The DOH is also emphasizing the importance of proper wound washing and avoiding contact with stray or unvaccinated animals.

With the alarming surge in rabies deaths, the government is intensifying efforts to promote responsible pet ownership and vaccination programs to curb further fatalities.
