MANILA, Philippines — Two foreign nationals wanted for child exploitation were arrested in separate operations this week, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said Sunday.
The BI identified the suspects as Swedish national Heinz Henry Andreas Berglund, 55, and Indonesian national Ignaz Ega Adhiaga, 28.
Berglund, wanted in Sweden for multiple child exploitation charges, was arrested on April 2 in Angeles City, Pampanga. According to the BI, Berglund had been in the Philippines for just over two weeks. Authorities said he is facing several counts of child sexual abuse and exploitation material (CSAEM) charges in his home country, with the victim reportedly a 10-year-old child.
He also has prior convictions related to financial fraud, the agency added.
The arrest was carried out by the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit in coordination with Swedish and US authorities, along with the National Bureau of Investigation’s Violence Against Women and Children Division.
A day later, BI agents arrested Adhiaga in coordination with the Philippine National Police’s Women and Children Protection Center. The Indonesian was reportedly involved in the trafficking of a 9-year-old child. Authorities said they recovered several explicit images of young children from his possession.
Both suspects are now facing deportation proceedings for violating Philippine immigration laws.
BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said the arrests were made possible through closer coordination with local and foreign law enforcement agencies.
“These cases show that the Philippines is not a safe haven for foreign child predators,” Viado said.
The arrests were made under the agency’s #ShieldKids campaign, an ongoing initiative aimed at targeting foreign nationals involved in child abuse and exploitation.
The BI urged the public to report suspicious foreign individuals or any incidents of child exploitation through its Facebook helpline or the Council for the Welfare of Children’s Makabata Helpline 1383.
