MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Wednesday confirmed that one of the four missing Filipinos in Mandalay, Myanmar has been found dead following the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck the country late last month.

In a statement, the DFA said the remains of the deceased have been positively identified, and the individual’s family has been notified. The agency declined to release further details, citing respect for the family’s privacy.

“We continue to work and hope for the best for the remaining three Filipinos still unaccounted for as a result of the powerful earthquake,” the department said.

The quake, which rattled central Myanmar’s Sagaing Region on March 28, caused widespread devastation across the country and parts of neighboring Thailand. Buildings collapsed, infrastructure was heavily damaged, and thousands were displaced.

A situational report from the United Nations released more than a week after the disaster pegged the national death toll at over 3,500, with more than 200 people still missing as rescue and recovery efforts continue.

The DFA said it remains in close coordination with local authorities and international agencies to locate the remaining missing Filipinos and provide support to affected overseas nationals.

Officials also urged the Filipino community in Myanmar to remain vigilant and to stay in contact with the Philippine Embassy in Yangon for updates and assistance.
