MANILA, Philippines — Senate Majority Leader Francis “Tol” Tolentino has called for the strict enforcement of the 60 kilometers per hour (kph) speed limit along major thoroughfares following a vehicular accident on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City that killed two passengers and injured sixteen others.

In a statement, Tolentino emphasized the continued relevance of the speed restriction, which was first implemented in 2011 during his tenure as chairman of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

“Commonwealth has been called the ‘killer highway’ due to the high number of accidents and fatalities there. To address this, we imposed the 60 kph speed limit during my term as MMDA Chairman,” he said.

Initial police reports and CCTV footage showed that the passenger jeepney involved in the incident was moving at high speed before losing control and crashing into two other vehicles.

“The 60 kph speed limit remains relevant today as it did when we first introduced it 14 years ago,” Tolentino said.

He added that while rules are in place to ensure traffic order and public safety, it is the responsibility of drivers and motorists to exercise discipline and road courtesy.
