MANILA, Philippines – Vice President Sara Duterte said her legal team is “more than confident” that they will win the impeachment case filed against her.
Duterte made the statement in an interview on Tuesday when she made a visit to her departed relatives in Danao City cemetery in Cebu. It was in response to La Union 1st District Rep. Francisco “Paolo” Ortega who said the vice president only endorses senatorial candidates to secure numbers in the Senate for her impeachment win.
“Hindi ko naman masabi kung ano ang preparations ng mga abogado sa impeachment dahil isa din ‘yun sa mga inaasikaso ko,” she said.
“At sinabi nila that they are more than confident in winning the impeachment trial, the impeachment case,” she said.
The vice president who has expressed openness in running for the 2028 presidential elections should her numbers prove satisfactory.
But she clarified since she is not participating in the coming midterm elections, she is only fulfilling her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte’s wish for her to help in the campaign of his senatorial candidates.
“Hindi naman ako kandidato sa eleksyon na ito. Wala namang presidential elections na darating na malapit na, malayo pa naman ‘yung presidential elections,” she said.
“Kinuha nila at sinabi ko nga, it was the Extraordinary Rendition in International Law. Kinuha nila ang Pangulo, dinala sa ibang bansa. At doon nagkausap kami, sabi niya wala na ako, hindi ako makakapangampanya. So pwede bang mangampanya nga para sa sa senator candidates?” she said, quoting the former president.
Duterte’s impeachment is set to roll after the 20th Congress enters into function in June. Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero said in earlier announcements that the trial will commence on July 30, tentatively.
