MANILA, Philippines — The government will implement strict screening of Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) applications to prevent misuse of the visa privilege, Malacañang said Monday.

Presidential Communications Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro assured that measures are in place to block foreign workers, particularly those previously linked to shuttered Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), from circumventing or abusing the visa system.

“There will be security features (in assessing DNV applications) in order to protect our country from any scammers or any violations of the law,” Castro said in a press briefing in Malacañang.

A digital nomad works remotely using technology, allowing them to travel or live in various locations outside their home country, relying on a stable internet connection to perform their work.

“We will be monitoring (the implementation of the DNV), unlike in the POGOs before. We will be securing the processes,” Castro added.

Castro said the government expects the influx of foreign workers with DNVs to drive up tourist arrivals and boost the country’s revenue.

“And it will definitely benefit the country and also the Filipino people,” she said.

She also said improvements at the country’s ports are being planned in anticipation of the expected increase in tourist arrivals.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. recently issued Executive Order No. 86, which establishes a legal framework to facilitate the entry of digital nomads and further boost the country’s tourism and economy.
