Pasig lone district candidate Christian Sia
MANILA, Philippines – Four days before the May 12 polls, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has disqualified Pasig City lone district candidate Christian Sia following his lewd remarks targeting single mothers and a former aide during his campaign sorties.
In a resolution released Thursday, the Comelec Second Division said Sia’s remarks “were not only inappropriate, but unlawful and offensive to the principles that guide fair and respectful elections.”
“Respondent is hereby DISQUALIFIED from continuing as a candidate for Member, House of Representatives, Lone Legislative District of Pasig City, in relation to the 2025 National and Local Elections,” it added.
Sia went viral over for saying: “Minsan sa isang taon, ang mga solo parent na babae na nireregla pa – Nay, malinaw, nireregla pa – at nalulungkot, minsan sa isang taon, puwedeng sumiping ho sa akin.”
Several women groups and advocates cried foul over Sia’s remarks citing possible violation of RA 9006 or the Fair Elections Act over his joke.
In a letter of response, Sia said his “joke” was “abridged” and “was maliciously spun to mislead people on social media.”
Sia defended that his statement was not meant to “discriminate, exclude, restrict, demean or harass female solo parents.”
Comelec chairman George Erwin Garcia stressed that candidates facing disqualification could still appeal the decision before the poll body en banc up all the way up to the Supreme Court.
