MANILA, Philippines — As millions of Filipinos head to polling precincts today, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairperson George Erwin Garcia called on voters to uphold dignity and integrity in choosing leaders, stressing that the power of change lies in their ballots.
In a public message titled “Reflections from the Chair” released on the eve of the national and local elections, Garcia reminded the public to remain vigilant against vote-buying and manipulation, especially from groups exploiting poverty to gain power.
“Panahon na para itaas ang antas ng pulitika,” Garcia said.
“Simulan ito sa pagboto nang may dangal at paninindigan,” he said,
The Comelec chair said the Commission has implemented reforms to ensure clean and honest elections, particularly focused on curbing vote-buying, misinformation, and disinformation.
Still, he warned that the reality remains harsh: “Palaging may mga tao at grupong sumusubok samantalahin ang kahirapan upang makamit ang kapangyarihan.”
To the candidates, Garcia issued a reminder to respect the electoral process.
“Sumunod sa mga alituntunin… at igalang ang ating mga botante,” he said, urging discipline and humility throughout the campaign and post-election period.
Garcia also extended thanks to teachers, poll workers, law enforcement, and election observers who help safeguard the integrity of the vote.
“Gampanan nating lahat ang ating tungkulin,” Garcia said.
“Ang bawat boto ay may parehong bigat at kapangyarihan,” he said.
