MANILA, Philippines—Senator Risa Hontiveros welcomed the results of the senatorial and party-list elections, saying these signal the strengthening of the “true opposition” in both chambers of Congress.

“Lumalakas na ang totoong oposisyon sa Senado at Kongreso!” Hontiveros said in a statement.

She described the results as more than just a political comeback, saying they reflect the people’s continued demand for a government that is principled, courageous, and compassionate.

Hontiveros also celebrated what she called the “historic victory” of the Akbayan Party-list, crediting the group’s strong performance to the trust and support of voters across the country.

“Once more, the Filipino people have brought Akbayan to the top of a very hard-fought party-list race,” she said.

The senator thanked Akbayan’s loyal supporters and acknowledged the role of first-time voters, calling the youth a “game-changer” in this election.

She also welcomed the return of former senators Kiko Pangilinan and Bam Aquino to the Senate, saying their voices are “badly needed” in the coming days.

In the House of Representatives, Hontiveros said she was glad that Akbayan will be joined by the Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Party-list led by former senator Leila de Lima, as both groups push for justice, human rights, and good governance.

“Simple at malinaw ang sigaw ng taumbayan: Itaas ang sahod. Ibaba ang presyo ng bilihin. Gawing abot-kamay ang edukasyon. At tiyaking may pananagutan ang nasa kapangyarihan,” she said.

With the opposition’s renewed presence in Congress, Hontiveros vowed they would face the challenges ahead with “heads held high, stronger, and more ready than ever.”
