MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine government said it is awaiting formal action from Timor-Leste on the potential transfer of former Negros Oriental Rep. Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr., who is facing multiple murder charges in connection with the killing of Governor Roel Degamo and other related crimes, according to the Department of Justice.

In a press statement, the government reiterated its readiness to bring Teves back to the Philippines to face trial, stressing that the extradition process had initially been granted but was later unexpectedly reversed, stalling his return.

“While we welcome the recent pronouncements from Timor-Leste indicating a renewed position that Mr. Teves should not remain in their territory, we await their action—whether he would simply be deported for being an undocumented foreigner or extradited forthwith pursuant to our pending application,” the statement read.

The DOJ said Philippine government said it has not received any legal or official document regarding Timor-Leste’s course of action, but emphasized its readiness to facilitate Teves’ transfer through the most expeditious means once the matter is clarified.

“We remain ready and committed to bring Mr. Teves to justice in accordance with the rule of law and the principles of international cooperation,” it added.

The Department of Justice said it continues to coordinate with Timor-Leste’s authorities and is prepared to act immediately once a formal process is initiated.
