MANILA, Philippines — An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who was sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia for drug-related charges has been granted freedom and safely repatriated to the Philippines, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced.
The male OFW, who was convicted on September 24, 2024, for possession of illegal drugs, was released following sustained diplomatic and legal efforts by the Philippine government, led by the DMW in coordination with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
“This achievement is a testament to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to safeguard the rights and welfare of our overseas Filipino workers, even in the most challenging circumstances,” said DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac.
The OFW was repatriated to the Philippines on the evening of June 10 and personally received by Secretary Cacdac at the DMW Central Office on June 11. He is now temporarily staying at a hotel in Pasay City under the care of OWWA while awaiting his return to his hometown in Butuan City.
The worker was arrested on April 2, 2023, and detained at Riyadh General Jail on September 10, 2023, before being sentenced to death.
According to the DMW, the government extended full legal representation and financial assistance to the OFW throughout the legal process. Secretary Cacdac also visited him earlier this year in Riyadh to personally convey the Philippine government’s support.
“Wala nang inisip ang ating Pangulo kundi ang kapakanan at kaligtasan ng ating mga OFWs. Iyan ang palaging paalala ng ating Pangulo sa amin sa DMW,” Cacdac said.
