MANILA, Philippines —Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique A. Manalo on Friday reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to the United Nations Charter during a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN Headquarters.
Manalo, representing the Philippines as a founding UN member, underscored the country’s dedication to multilateralism, international law, and a rules-based international order. He discussed with Guterres key Philippine priorities and areas of cooperation with the UN, including peace and security, development, human rights, and environmental initiatives.
Secretary-General Guterres lauded the Philippines for its “credible, valuable, and positive contributions” to the UN and recognized the country as a strong partner in advancing global goals.
Both officials tackled pressing global issues, notably climate change, sustainable development financing, peacekeeping, and reforms in the UN Security Council. They highlighted the urgent need for innovative solutions to address gaps in climate adaptation financing and the loss and damage fund, particularly for vulnerable countries like the Philippines.
Guterres also extended his greetings to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and conveyed well wishes to the country on its 127th Independence Day.
Secretary Manalo was joined by Philippine Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Antonio M. Lagdameo, and other officials from the Philippine Mission.
