MANILA, Philippines — A labor group representing workers in the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry has condemned members of the Philippine Senate over their failure to prioritize a legislated wage hike before the 19th Congress adjourns.

In a statement issued late Sunday, BPO Industry Employees Network (BIEN) Pilipinas labeled senators as “disgusting” for what it described as a “blatant display of treason and corruption.”

The group criticized lawmakers for allegedly neglecting the welfare of millions of Filipino workers, particularly the urgent need to raise daily minimum wages to at least P800.

“It is not that hard to comprehend the importance of a legislated wage hike,” the group said, calling the Senate’s inaction “reprehensible” and “detestable.” BIEN argued that a proposed P200 increase would only represent about seven percent to 10 percent in additional expenses from company profits, a cost it claimed would be easily absorbed by large conglomerates.

The statement also took aim at several of the country’s wealthiest business families—including the Villars, Gokongweis, Tans, Sys, Razons, and Angs—who BIEN said employ the majority of the workforce.

“How much profit do they need to make to consider that they are earning profits?” the group statement read.

BIEN further denounced what it called the Senate’s “lack of legal and parliamentary know-how” in its recent handling of impeachment proceedings.

The group accused lawmakers of abandoning their constitutional duties and claimed both the Vice President and Senate President should be removed from office.

Following their graveyard shifts, BIEN members said they will begin protest actions, including marching to the Senate and symbolically spitting on its walls “of a dishonored congress.”

The group called on fellow workers and the public to join them in expressing outrage over what they view as continued neglect and betrayal by the country’s elected officials.
