MANILA, Philippines — Ischemic heart diseases, neoplasms, and cerebrovascular diseases remained the top three causes of death in the Philippines from January to November 2024, according to data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
The PSA reported that ischaemic heart diseases led the list with 106,088 deaths, accounting for 19.3 percent of total fatalities nationwide.
Neoplasms, or abnormal tissue growths including cancers, ranked second with 60,801 deaths or 11.1 percent of the total, while cerebrovascular diseases—such as stroke—ranked third with 53,872 deaths, making up 9.8 percent.
Pneumonia was the fourth leading cause with 36,456 deaths or 6.6 percent, followed by diabetes mellitus with 34,419 deaths, representing 6.3 percent.
The ranking of leading causes remained consistent with the same period in 2023, based on civil registry data submitted to the Office of the Civil Registrar General.
The PSA clarified that the report does not include deaths with symptoms, signs, and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings classified under ICD-10 codes R00-R99, due to their unspecified nature.
The full list of causes is based on the ICD-10 mortality tabulation list, with deaths coded and grouped according to official international rules and guidelines.
