MANILA — An official of the Department of Energy (DOE) on Wednesday underscored the need for increased collaboration between the government and private sector to meet the Philippines’ target of raising renewable energy’s (RE) share in the energy mix to 35 percent by 2030.

Energy Assistant Secretary Mylene Capongcol made the statement following the commissioning of the Samal Solar Renewable Energy Project by the Samal Solar Renewable Energy Corporation on Tuesday.

In a statement, the DOE said the solar plant is now supplying 41.92 megawatts (MW) of clean energy to the Luzon grid.

“This Solar Project is a testament to the transformative power of renewable energy,” Capongcol said. “It not only provides clean power but also fuels local development through employment and capacity building. This is the kind of sustainable, inclusive progress we are working to achieve nationwide.”

As of end-April 2025, DOE data show there are 1,392 active RE contracts in the country, with a combined installed capacity of 7.05 gigawatts. (PNA)
