MANILA — The Department of Transportation (DOTr), in partnership with Grab Philippines, on Thursday distributed bicycles and safety gear to 20 beneficiaries as part of efforts to promote active transport in the country.
The recipients, chosen through the “Ride to Thrive: Bike Giveaway for Mobility” campaign, received pedal-assist bicycles and helmets donated by Grab Philippines through the DOTr’s Active Transport Project Management Office.
The initiative aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s commitment to prioritize active transport—particularly walking and cycling—by placing it at the top of the road user hierarchy. The administration is pushing for the construction of safe walkways and protected bike lanes to support healthier and more sustainable travel options.
“We continue to create projects like this to further strengthen and encourage our cycling community. We commit to providing infrastructure and protection to every Filipino cyclist,” said DOTr Undersecretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure Atty. Mark Steven C. Pastor.
The DOTr is also implementing upgraded pedestrian safety infrastructure along ADB Avenue in Ortigas Center, Pasig City, including two raised pedestrian crossings near Discovery Suites Manila and the Asian Development Bank to promote traffic calming and improve visibility.
“Road safety is not just the responsibility of government or civil society groups. It is an obligation of everyone,” Pastor added.
Through these projects, the DOTr reiterates its dedication to road safety and protecting vulnerable road users.
