MANILA – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has announced that the 2025 Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Parliamentary Elections will push through with only 73 seats up for voting, following the absence of legislation to reallocate the seven seats previously assigned to the Province of Sulu.
In a statement released Tuesday, Comelec said the decision is based on Minute Resolution No. 25-0738, dated June 17, 2025, and was made after careful consideration of the tight pre-election timelines.
Comelec clarified that the allocation of district representative seats for other provinces within the Bangsamoro region remains unaffected by the resolution.
For now, the seven district representative seats allocated to Sulu will be considered temporarily vacant. These vacancies may be filled through presidential appointment or by a future ruling of the Supreme Court, the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA), or the Philippine Congress.
The BARMM Parliamentary Elections are scheduled for October 13, 2025.
