MANILA — Several local government units (LGUs) have suspended classes for Monday, July 21, due to ongoing inclement weather caused by the southwest monsoon and associated weather disturbances.

Class suspensions cover face-to-face classes at all levels, public and private schools, in areas including:

  • Benguet: Kibungan (daycare to Senior High School), Atok (preschool to Senior High School)
  • Pampanga: Masantol
  • Pangasinan: Dagupan (all levels), Mangaldan (preschool to Senior High School), San Carlos City (preschool to Senior High School)
  • Bulacan: Meycauayan City, Malolos City, San Jose del Monte City, Bocaue, Norzagaray, San Rafael, Obando, Balagtas

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) forecasts continued rains in parts of Luzon and Visayas on Monday, with improving conditions expected in Mindanao.

“We expect continued rainy weather where occasional rains are forecast in Metro Manila and western portions of Central and Southern Luzon,” Pagasa weather specialist Veronica Torres said in the 5 p.m. forecast.

Torres added, “We expect continued rains in areas of Visayas by tomorrow and improving weather in many parts of Mindanao by tomorrow.”

Pagasa is also monitoring cloud clusters in the eastern Philippines, which may develop into a low-pressure area.

Meanwhile, Severe Tropical Storm Wipha remains outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility, located 935 kilometers west of Extreme Northern Luzon as of 3 p.m., packing maximum sustained winds of 110 kph with gusts up to 150 kph.

A gale warning has been raised due to rough to very rough seas (wave heights of 2.8 to 4.5 meters) along:

  • Western coast of Pangasinan
  • Zambales
  • Lubang Islands

Weather conditions across the country due to the southwest monsoon include:

  • Monsoon rains: Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro
  • Occasional rains: Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Benguet, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Oriental Mindoro, Antique, Iloilo
  • Cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms: Rest of Luzon, Rest of Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Caraga Region
  • Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated thunderstorms or rainshowers: Rest of Mindanao

Heavy rainfall of 50 to 100 millimeters from Sunday afternoon to Monday afternoon is expected in Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, Antique, and Iloilo.

From Monday afternoon to Tuesday afternoon, additional heavy rainfalls are forecast:

  • 100 to 200 mm: Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro
  • 50 to 100 mm: Metro Manila, Pangasinan, La Union, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas, Rizal, Antique, Negros Occidental

Between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon, rains of 100 to 200 mm are expected in Zambales, Bataan, Pangasinan, Occidental Mindoro, and Antique, while 50 to 100 mm is forecast in Metro Manila and several other provinces.

Residents are advised to remain vigilant and monitor local weather updates as heavy rains and rough sea conditions persist, it said.
