MANILA — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Sunday expressed gratitude to Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III for donating over P16 million in proceeds from the “Boxing for a Cause: Laban sa Nasalanta” charity match held at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.
“We thank Gen. Torre and the PNP for donating to the DSWD the more than P16 million that came from the proceeds of the boxing match. The huge amount of donation will go a long way in terms of assistance to millions of our fellow Filipinos who were affected by the habagat and other weather disturbances,” said Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao, the DSWD’s spokesperson.
The PNP collected over P300,000 in entrance fees and received donations amounting to more than P16 million. Gen. Torre was declared the winner of the match by default. The full amount will be officially turned over to the DSWD this week.
As of Friday, July 26, the DSWD has extended a total of P293 million in assistance to families and individuals affected by recent tropical storms and the Southwest Monsoon.
