MANILA — A new civilian witness is set to come forward in the case of the missing sabungeros (cockfight enthusiasts), bringing what authorities described as concrete evidence that could reinforce existing testimonies, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said.
Remulla said the witness would strengthen the account of whistleblower Julie Patidongan, also known as Totoy, and help identify key individuals linked to the case.
“Mayroon kaming bagong testigo na lalabas. It bolsters the credibility of Totoy. May naging problema dati ang investigators to identify somebody, iyong somebody na ina-identify ito iyon,” he told reporters.
Unlike earlier testimonies, the new witness is expected to present more than anecdotal evidence.
Medyo bago, hindi pa lumalabas sa media… sibilyan,” Remulla said.
He also confirmed asking Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III to relieve a police commander previously involved in the investigation, citing concerns over the official’s conduct.
Ito kasi, very important witness ito,” Remulla said.
The justice secretary said the move cleared the path for a more focused resolution to the case.
Meanwhile, search operations in Taal Lake have resumed after a week-long suspension caused by bad weather. Authorities are looking for possible human remains linked to the case. (PNA)
