MANILA — All vehicles will be banned from parking on public roads in Metro Manila starting September 1 as the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) pushes for a unified No Parking policy across the capital region.
DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla made the announcement during a joint meeting with the Metro Manila Council and the Regional Development Council on Friday, urging all local chief executives in the National Capital Region to adopt a synchronized approach to curb street parking and improve urban mobility.
“So we’re going to be very strict about it. Gagawin namin ang whole city map para makita nila saan pwedeng pumarada, saan hindi,” said Remulla, adding that Metro Manila will serve as a pilot for the nationwide rollout of the policy.
He emphasized that local mayors will be responsible for identifying specific areas in their cities where parking will no longer be allowed. “Ang mga mayor ang mag-a-identify. But they have all agreed that we have to make the cities better and we have to make it more livable,” he said.
Among the proposals being studied is the designation of all public roads as No Parking zones, especially those contributing to traffic congestion. Time-based parking bans during rush hours, similar to those in Makati City, are also being considered.
“What the mayors suggested is that during peak hours, dun talaga walang parking sa mga kalye ng Metro Manila,” Remulla noted.
The DILG chief said the final version of the policy will be released by September 1, but noted that all Metro Manila mayors are aligned in addressing the problem.
“The intent is to make Metro Manila more livable. So every month, may initiatives tayo on how to make the cities a better place to live in, and even the other cities in the country,” he said.
The meeting was attended by MMDA Chairperson Romando Artes, San Juan City Mayor and Metro Manila Council President Francisco Zamora, and other NCR mayors.
