MANILA – Bureau of Customs (BOC) Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno apologized for confusion caused by the agency’s Online Duty and Tax Calculator, following public complaints about discrepancies in computed charges.
“Upon review, we confirmed that the final assessment of duties and taxes on her shipment is correct and based on the requirements of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA) and related regulations,” Nepomuceno said.
He explained that the calculator only provides estimates and “does not yet reflect all lawful charges required by law, which may have led to misunderstanding when compared with the official assessment.”
To address this, Nepomuceno said he has ordered the temporary removal of the tool until an upgraded version is completed. The new system, he added, will provide a clearer, more comprehensive breakdown of charges and be regularly updated to reflect prevailing rates.
“We respect and support the public in voicing out their concerns and grievances. We commend Ms. Bela Padilla for raising her point calmly and professionally. Constructive feedback like this helps us strengthen transparency and better serve the public,” he said.
The commissioner assured the public of the BOC’s commitment to “transparency, accuracy, and continuous improvement” in its processes.
