MAKILALA, North Cotabato – The Bureau of Customs (BOC) intercepted around 150 master cases of smuggled cigarettes worth about P5.93 million during a joint operation with the Philippine National Police (PNP), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), and other enforcement agencies.

The contraband was discovered inside a wing van truck that had stalled in Makilala town last August 14.

Authorities found the vehicle partially open, revealing boxes of cigarettes concealed under rice hulls. The truck and its operators were later brought to General Santos City for further investigation and inventory.

The cigarettes and the vehicle will be turned over to the BOC–General Santos through the Enforcement and Security Service for safekeeping. The two individuals operating the van are now under PNP custody pending the filing of charges.

A Warrant of Seizure and Detention will be issued for violation of Sections 400, 117, and 1113 of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, in relation to regulations of the National Tobacco Administration.

Customs Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno said the agency remains committed to curbing smuggling and protecting government revenues. “From day one, the President’s call was straightforward — eliminate corruption, combat smuggling, and uphold good governance. Working in full harmony with our partner enforcement units, we will continue to crack down on illicit cigarettes, safeguard legitimate tobacco producers and retailers, and ensure that government revenues are preserved for programs that directly benefit the people,” Nepomuceno said.

Acting Subport Collector Ralph S. Rojo, under the guidance of Port of Davao District Collector Maita S. Acevedo, also stressed the BOC’s mandate to promote legitimate trade and protect the welfare of Filipinos.
