MANILA — Filipino boxing legend Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao on Thursday expressed his gratitude to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for extending “all-out” support for the upcoming commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the “Thrilla in Manila.”
Pacquiao paid a courtesy call on the President in Malacañang, where he said the Chief Executive’s backing would greatly contribute to the success of the event.
The “Thrilla in Manila” celebration, set in October, will mark five decades since the iconic 1975 boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier at the Araneta Coliseum. The week-long commemoration will feature boxing events showcasing Filipino pride and talent, with the possibility of world title bouts.
“Napakalaking tulong nito at salamat sa suporta ng ating Pangulo,” Pacquiao said, adding that government agencies were expected to assist in preparations.
Pacquiao also confirmed that President Marcos has shown strong interest in attending the event. “Manonood siya. Interesadong-interesado siya sa concept na ‘yun,” he said.
During the Palace visit, Pacquiao presented the President with the World Boxing Council (WBC) belt he won in his comeback fight against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios in Las Vegas on July 19, along with a pair of boxing gloves as a gift.
