MANILA — Women’s group Women Workers United (WWU) on Wednesday welcomed the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) announcement proclaiming Gabriela Women’s Party (GWP) as the 64th winning party-list in the House of Representatives.

WWU described the proclamation as a “significant victory” for Filipino women, saying it ensures that women’s voices and concerns will continue to be represented in Congress through what they called “genuine, pro-people leadership.”

The group cited GWP’s first nominee, Rep. Sarah Elago, as a progressive legislator with a track record of holding officials accountable and advancing policies for marginalized sectors.

Gabriela Women’s Party has been known for championing women’s rights, gender equality, and social justice. It has also worked with grassroots communities and networks, including WWU, in crafting the Women Workers’ Agenda.

The agenda outlines legislative priorities such as wage hike measures, the Security of Tenure Bill, the SOGIESC Equality Bill, enabling laws for ILO Convention 190, and the Divorce Bill. WWU said they expect GWP to continue pushing for the passage of these bills in the 20th Congress.

WWU added that they will remain vigilant to ensure the proclamation pushes through as promised this week, stressing that there should be “no further delays” in recognizing the mandate of marginalized women in Congress.
