MANILA – More than 17,500 families have been affected by the combined effects of the southwest monsoon (habagat) and tropical cyclones Mirasol and Nando, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Friday.

As of Friday morning, 17,588 families, or 64,461 individuals, from 95 barangays in Cagayan Valley, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Central Luzon, Bicol Region, and Western Visayas have been affected.

The NDRRMC said 108 families are staying in 15 evacuation centers, while 197 families are receiving assistance while temporarily sheltered elsewhere.

Authorities stressed that the figures are subject to change pending validation. No casualties or deaths related to the weather disturbances have so far been reported.

In its 11 a.m. update, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Tropical Storm Nando (international name Ragasa) has slightly accelerated, moving westward at 20 kilometers per hour over the Philippine Sea.

PAGASA added that the hoisting of Wind Signal No. 1 is likely to begin on Saturday as Nando continues to enhance the southwest monsoon. (PNA)
