MANILA — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Sunday directed all local government units (LGUs) to immediately enforce preemptive evacuation and other critical safety measures as Typhoon Nando intensified into a super typhoon.
DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla stressed that with Nando strengthening further, “preemptive evacuation is no longer an option but an obligation of government and a responsibility of communities.”
The department earlier issued advisories instructing LGUs to prepare evacuation centers, impose liquor bans in high-risk areas, strictly enforce the no-sail policy, and secure critical infrastructure. With the threat now greater, Remulla said these directives must be implemented “swiftly and without delay.”
LGUs were also reminded to provide food and humanitarian support to evacuees, clear waterways, monitor dams and quarry sites, and ensure the safety of families in flood- and landslide-prone areas.
“The classification of Nando as a super typhoon makes preemptive evacuation non-negotiable. Government action combined with citizen cooperation is the only way to save lives,” Remulla said.
The DILG said it is coordinating with Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (RDRRMCs) and local chief executives to guarantee that all barangays are prepared. The public was urged to stay alert and monitor PAGASA bulletins and LGU advisories.
