
MANILA — Super Typhoon Nando (international name: Ragasa) made landfall over Panuitan Island in Calayan, Cagayan on Monday afternoon, the state weather bureau reported.
In its 5 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said the typhoon’s eye was located over the coastal waters of Calayan Island, packing maximum sustained winds of 215 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, gusts of up to 295 kph, and a central pressure of 910 hPa. It is moving westward at 25 kph.
PAGASA said strong to typhoon-force winds extend outward up to 650 kilometers from Nando’s center.
Wind signals raised
- Signal No. 5: Babuyan Islands (extreme threat to life and property)
- Signal No. 4: Southern Batanes, northern Cagayan, and northern Ilocos Norte (significant to severe threat)
- Signal No. 3: Rest of Batanes, central Cagayan, Apayao, and the rest of Ilocos Norte (moderate to significant threat)
- Signal No. 2: Isabela, Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, parts of Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya, Ilocos Sur, and northern La Union (minor to moderate threat)
- Signal No. 1: Quirino, Nueva Ecija, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bulacan, Aurora, Tarlac, Pampanga, northern Quezon including Polillo Islands, and the rest of Benguet and La Union (minimal to minor threat)
Other hazards
- Storm surges of over 3 meters may hit low-lying coastal areas in Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur within the next 24 hours.
- Very rough seas up to 14 meters are expected over the seaboards of Northern Luzon, making sea travel extremely risky.
- Heavy rains from the typhoon and the southwest monsoon may trigger floods and landslides in affected areas.
Forecast track
PAGASA said Nando has reached peak intensity but may slightly intensify further before gradually weakening within 24 hours as it moves over the West Philippine Sea. The typhoon is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Tuesday morning, September 23.
The weather bureau urged residents in affected areas to heed evacuation orders and other instructions from local authorities.
