MANILA – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said that three more private contractors may have contributed to the campaign funds of national candidates in the May 2022 elections.

Comelec Chairperson George Garcia said the poll body’s Political Finance and Affairs Department (PFAD), which scrutinizes candidates’ Statements of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCE), discovered the additional firms in its ongoing probe.

“We need confirmation from the DPWH. Last night, we said that what PFAD is requesting confirmation from DPWH [is] now at 55 contractors. Fifty-two at first, there are three more. These three are for positions higher than senator,” Garcia told reporters on the sidelines of a forum in Makati City.

He confirmed that the investigation covers candidates for president and vice president in 2022. The Comelec is still awaiting the Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) response on whether the 55 firms had government contracts.

At the same time, Garcia said businessman Lawrence Lubiano, president of Centerways Construction and Development Inc., appeared before the Comelec to explain his ₱30-million donation to Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero’s campaign.

“His lawyer brought the documents and explanation we asked from him,” Garcia said, adding that the PFAD will also summon Escudero through a show cause order.

Under the Omnibus Election Code, contractors with government projects are prohibited from donating to candidates or political parties. (PNA)
