
MANILA – The combined effects of the southwest monsoon (habagat) and three tropical cyclones—Mirasol, Nando, and Opong—have left 26 people dead and nearly 2.8 million affected nationwide, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Sunday.
The NDRRMC said 738,714 families or 2,797,706 individuals were affected by days of torrential rains, floods, and landslides triggered by the enhanced southwest monsoon.
Of the total, 46,611 families or 163,317 persons are taking shelter in 2,680 evacuation centers, while 31,448 families or 118,957 individuals are receiving assistance outside evacuation sites.
The report recorded 26 fatalities, 33 injured, and 14 missing. Most deaths were in the Bicol Region (9) and Cagayan Valley (8). Four were reported in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), two each in Central Luzon and Central Visayas, and one in Eastern Visayas.
At least 8,916 houses were damaged across Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, CAR, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
Damage to agriculture has exceeded ₱1 billion, while infrastructure losses were placed at ₱864.1 million in Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, CAR, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, and Western and Central Visayas.
The NDRRMC said government aid worth ₱137.6 million has been distributed to 149,675 families through national agencies and local government units. (PNA)
