MANILA — The Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) has apologized to veteran actress Rosa Rosal and her family after erroneously announcing her death.

FAMAS had earlier posted an obituary card for Rosal — who turns 97 later this month — on its social media accounts. The post has since been deleted, with the organization admitting that the information it received was false.

“Ms. Rosal remains with us, and we deeply regret any confusion or distress this may have caused her family, friends, and admirers,” FAMAS said in a statement.

The group emphasized that it values truth and integrity and vowed to be more careful in verifying information before issuing public statements.

Entertainment journalist Mell Navarro confirmed with Rosal’s grandnephew, William Thio, that the actress is indeed alive. Navarro later shared a video from Thio showing Rosal greeting viewers with a cheerful, “Merry Christmas.”

Born Florence Lansang Danon, Rosal rose to prominence during the Golden Age of Philippine Cinema, starring in classics such as “Anak Dalita,” “Badjao,” and “Biyaya ng Lupa.” Her later works include “Sakada” and “Esperanza: The Movie,” where she reprised her role from the original 1998 TV series.

She also appeared in numerous television dramas such as “Saan Ka Man Naroroon,” “Ang Iibigin Ay Ikaw,” “Narito ang Puso Ko,” and “Vietnam Rose.” Beyond acting, Rosal became a beloved public figure as host of the long-running public service programs “Damayan” and “Kapwa Ko Mahal Ko.”
