MANILA – Malacañang rejected renewed calls to amend the 1987 Constitution to introduce electoral reforms, saying what the country needs is not a constitutional change but a “change of heart” and “change of attitude” among public officials.
Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro said President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. does not support moves to amend the Constitution at this time.
“Constitutional change may not be appropriate right now. What is needed is integrity and sincerity in leadership, a change of attitude among officers, and a change of heart — to be pro-Filipino and patriotic,” Castro said.
The statement came after House Minority Leader and 4Ps Rep. Marcelino Libanan proposed amendments to introduce what he described as “genuine electoral reforms,” following Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano’s call for a snap election for top elective officials.
Malacañang had earlier dismissed Cayetano’s snap election proposal as “wishful thinking,” emphasizing that the President is focused on responding to the needs of those affected by recent calamities. (PNA)
